While the New York Times patiently (and probably futilely) points out that men’s and women’s reports of their number of sex partners doesn’t match, John Scalzi has a much more elegant explanation.
Less amusing is the possibility that women aren’t counting nonconsensual sexual encounters, and men are. But this probably isn’t skewing the numbers to the point that, as in the article, one survey finds men reporting twice as many sex partners as women.

Okay, they carefully asked for heterosexual sex partners so it seems unlikely that they’re counting the occasional glory hole visit or something else on the down low.
Or perhaps if you’re not sure that the person in the booth next to you is male or female you can claim hetero… *shakes head*
So the old saw is true: “When asking a man how many partners he’s had, you can take his answer and half it to get the truth. When asking a woman, take her answer and double it.”

#’s 2 and 3 occured during extended breakups and THEY DON’T COUNT because:
1) the earth did not move for me, and….
2) the earth DEFINITELY did not move for me.
If I didn’t get any cookies, I shouldn’t have to claim I ate any, Dammit!
“That wasn’t a cookie. It was more like a cracker.”
Technically –
They really should provide mean, standard deviation and skew. I have no idea why they don’t, since the statistics can be automatically generated in Excel.
Further, they should include MM, MF, FF statistics at the very least as seperate entries.
